The City of Pontiac has recently released more detailed information concerning the upcoming 175th Birthday celebration to be held July 27 & 28 at Humiston Riverside Park. On Friday, July 27, festivities will begin at 6 PM with a free community picnic. Supplies will be limited, so everyone is encouraged to come early to enjoy the food. Also at 6 pm, there will be children’s games, local food vendors, an appearance by ISU’s Reggie Redbird, and local entertainers. At 8:00 PM, members of the Illinois State Poetry Society – Pontiac Chapter will be doing a poetry reading. Friday’s fun will conclude with a free outdoor showing of the Disney’s motion picture, Cars.
On Saturday, two of Pontiac’s historic homes will be open for tours. The Jones House, located at 314 E. Madison Street will be open 10 – 3 PM, and the Yost House located at 298 E. Water Street will be open 1 – 4 PM. Pontiac’s Jolly Trolley will be running a hop-on hop-off route around downtown with stops at the historic homes, and all the museums. At 3:30 PM, the Mighty Vermillion Duck Race will be held to benefit the Pontiac Boys & Girls Club. At 4 PM the birthday party will continue with cake and ice cream served up by local dignitaries – once again supplies are limited, so come early! The Vermillion Players will be performing music from their recent show, Sentimental Journey, and the “Sound of Illinois” barbershop chorus will also perform. Local service organizations will be selling food and snacks at the park and there will be Charity Bed Races starting at 6:30. At 7:30, Tim & Mike will be showcasing their acoustic rock music on the stage. At 8:45 there will be a free outdoor showing of the motion picture which was filmed here in Pontiac – Grandview USA.
Among the organizations involved in vending food or other items at the park are, the St. Mary’s TPO, Bandsavers, Pontiac Wrestling Club, the Pontiac High School Golf Team, Kiwanis, and Livingston County 4-H Ambassadors. People wishing to enter the Charity Bed Races can find registration information and rules on the City of Pontiac web page. Proceeds from the Bed Races will go to the Charity of the winning teams’ choice.
