[ARCHIVED] City to Host Tourism Season Preview March 4th

The City of Pontiac’s Office of Tourism and Pontiac’s Main Street Organization, P.R.O.U.D. will host an informational meeting on Tuesday, March 4th at 5:15 PM in the City Council Chambers located at 115 West Howard Street. The purpose of the meeting is to preview the upcoming tourism season in Pontiac. Pontiac’s merchants, interested citizens, and volunteers are welcome to attend. According to Ellie Alexander, Pontiac’s Director of Tourism, “This meeting will get us all better prepared for all of the events and visitors that we anticipate during the 2014 season. We already have more than 50 coach tours booked, and car clubs and other groups are making their plans now.” Lori Fairfield, the head of Pontiac P.R.O.U.D, will discuss the ways local merchants can capitalize on the more than 30,000 visitors who come to the downtown area between April and September.

Anyone interested in becoming part of the volunteer tourism staff is welcome to come to the meeting and learn more about the kinds of opportunities that are available. Volunteers typically greet visitors, serve as guides, assist as docents in the local museums, and help with special events. Alexander noted, “We have had a wonderful crew of local people who have made Pontiac one of the most hospitable towns in Illinois. We want to continue that tradition and could always use a few more friendly volunteers.”
